Nocturne Inferno Illustrations

One of my most recent projects that I have been working on is a series of illustrations for K.L. Young’s Nocturne Inferno. It's a story about an amateur musician who, by chance, obtains the legendary guitar once owned by his hero, the great Erik Zann. Then things start get a little dark and murdery.

I had a lot of fun with creating these images. I could easily picture what I wanted to draw while I was reading these characters and, overall, I'm pretty happy with the end result.

This project gave me the opportunity to explore some changes to the way I usually approach colour in my illustrations. I purposely tried to hold back on the dark tones that I would normally use, which I think gives these images more of a distinct stylistic theme and more of a comic book feel.

I am yet to add some black and white sketches to this collection of illustrations.

I have added some new life into some older pics for my contribution to this year's Laneway Festival in Brisbane. These pics will feature as stickers and posters around the site. I'm also working on some stencils, which I'll post later.

Part 3 of The Resurrection of Anton Fields is now complete.

Part 3 will be available in Strange Aeons Magazine #14, sometime this year.

The Resurrection of Anton Fields

Well, it has been a while since I posted here and it's not because I haven't been working on anything. I've just been too busy with my real job, study and my family. Seems like finding time to draw is fairly difficult enough, let alone trying to keep my neglected blog up to date. But the fact that you are reading this means things have slowed down a little for me, which also means.... time to draw more comics.

Anyway, my latest story I'm sporadically struggling with is The Resurrection of Anton Fields for Strange Aeons Magazine in Seattle.

Anton in an aimless young man who lacks any ambition. His life is going nowhere. He is about to lose his job and his girlfriend, both of which he is lucky to have in the first place. Suddenly things start to look up as his life takes an interesting turn when he dies.

Anton discovers he is a major asset in a bureaucratic nightmare that has been shaping the world for millennia.

Part 1 and 2 are available in Strange Aeons Magazine #11 and #12 and I am currently working on Part 3.

Howard Lovecraft Cover

Which brings me to my latest piece which will be a new cover in Bruce Brown's Howard Lovecraft series.

Seeing as this is one of my more realised pictures of late, I thought it might be nice to show the steps I took to come up with the final image.

The brief was to have the characters posing in a Victorian style portrait. I immediately sketched this...

...which then became this...

At this point my uni assignments and work began to take over my life so I left the picture for a while, which I guess turned out to be a good thing as it gave me a chance to imagine how it might eventuate.
Along came my holiday break and I get a couple of days to myself...

After finalising the characters in Photoshop I needed the background...

Rob's art at Laneway Festival 2013

If you happen to be at Brisbane's leg of this year's Laneway Festival, Friday 1st February, you might just stumble across some familiar characters decorating the RNA Showgrounds.

Once again I will be displaying some of my characters and comic pages along with a bunch of fantastic Brisbane comic artists.
While you're roaming between the bands make sure you keep a look out for comic pages covering the walls and I think there will be some zines to purchase as well.

Final Instalment of Hell Dorado

Issue 9 of Strange Aeons Magazine will feature not only a whole lot of cool horror/weird comics, but also the final instalment of Hell Dorado.

Hell Dorado is the story I have been drawing for the past year and a bit for writer Laurence Amoitte.  A post-apocalyptic western full of demons, gunfights, blood, explosions, etc...  you get the idea.

Hell Dorado has been featured in the past issues of Strange Aeons makes this my longest published effort, so if you're keen to see the whole story you can go to Strange-Aeons.com and order yourself some copies.
